The Legend of Valentine's Day
When I was a school-girl, (in the old days of the 60s), my
girlfriends and I giggled and whispered in anxious anticipation of
the class Valentine's Day celebration. We painstakingly and
elaborately pasted colored paper and sprinkled glitter on the
"mailboxes" we created for the delivery of the coveted Valentine
cards. We were really too young for romance but the importance of
friendship and popularity was delivered with each message of "Be
Mine" or "Be My Valentine". And so this quaint custom of love,
friendship and romance has continued through cultures and
generations for almost 2000 years.
During the ancient times of the Roman Empire February 14 was a
pagan holiday which was celebrated in honor of Juno, the Queen of
the Roman Gods and Goddesses. The Lupercalia Feasts began the
following day, February 15. During the celebrations a "love
lottery" was held where the names of maidens were placed in a box
to be selected randomly by the young men hoping to find love.
St. Valentine lived during the third century of the Roman Empire
under the rule of Emperor Claudius II. The Emperor blamed married
life for a shortage of men willing to be soldiers in his many
bloody battles and so he outlawed all marriages. The priest,
Valentine, defied Claudius by continuing to perform marriages in
secrecy. When the clandestine marriage ceremonies became known to
Claudius he had Valentine imprisoned, tortured and ultimately,
beheaded. St. Valentine was martyred on February 14, 270AD and
became the Patron Saint of Lovers. Legend has it that he left a
farewell note to a young woman who had visited and befriended him
during his imprisonment. The note was signed, "Your Valentine".
Today, almost two thousand years later, February 14th continues to
be a time of romance and love. In these modern times the
sentiment is as likely to be expressed through email or a
text-message as an old fashioned Valentine Card delivered to a
child's decorated mailbox. But the message is the same and
Universal....Love.
Below we have compiled a list of great valentine's day gifts.
